]]>The space race of the 1960's was the era that almost all manufacturers offered double-seat briefs for both boys and men. Sears offered students and little boys the double seat option for longer wear, comfort and absorbency.

]]>Thanks to Brad, (one of our followers to this blog) we received this old advertisement for Munsingwear Underwear Company.
Munsingwear ad campaign back in the 1940's was "And don't say underwear---say Munsingwear". Interesting to note that Jockey by then had already accomplish this style of branding.
]]>Wards was a popular department stores in the 1980's. They also wanted to inform customers that their boys briefs featured an exclusive double-seat. It was unfortunate that by the 1990's, Wards also stopped offering this style of brief. It wasn't until almost 30 years later that Tiger Underwear made this classic style available again!
]]>I always smile when I find vintage department store double-back briefs on eBay. Just this month a 3 pack of JC Penney Austin Manor Double-Back Briefs sold for $159.99. It's unfortunate that JC Penney stopped making these, disappointing me as well as thousands if not millions of other customers who had the pleasure wearing these back in the days.
]]>Above was a similar "Lord of the Flies" experiment that was done 1954. It is a story of boys between the ages of 11 and 12 that were used in a science study that today would be considered wrong on every level! This YouTube video is fascinating look into human behavior that I felt worth sharing. Below is a 1954 ad for Hanes briefs for boys which was one of the most popular brief in this time period.
]]>A question that comes up all the time, "What made you decide to make a retro style double-seat brief?" One of the obvious reason Tiger Underwear got into the business is how much they end up selling for on eBay. Just a few days ago, a 3-pack of JC Penney's Double Seat Briefs (men's size 34 inch waist; circa 1960's) sold on eBay for $399.
Tiger Underwear customers for the last 12 years have been able to purchase our retro department style briefs like they wore before.
]]>Reinforced seat seams are serged to enhances the built quality of these JC Penney's double-back briefs. Just like the audible swooshing noise of corduroys jeans of this time period, visible underwear lines as shown above were just part of the sights and sounds of 1970's fashions!
]]>Anyone interested in going back in time to 1971? Above is the video portal you can click on and you'll feel like you have been thrown back almost 50 years ago to a Junior High gym class! I recommend Junior High School in September's blog, well here is the other half.
Keep in mind that this type of school documentary is rare and somehow both the teachers and students seem to be completely oblivious to the cameramen and lighting that would have been necessary back then to have shot this documentary. From a fashion point a view, you'll see all the classics e.g. denim shirts and jackets to v-neck cardigan sweaters.
Mom's that did there shopping at Wards (according to the Fall and Winter catalog from that time period), would have had not one but 4 styles of boys sizes full cut briefs to select from! Going from best to most affordable was Ward's Best Kodel and SuPima blend versus a 100% cotton Heavyweight interlock nit. Mom could also choose a quality 100% SuPima cotton or a budget friendly cotton and nylon blend. Important to note, all four of Wards offerings shown below had the double-seat!
]]>This newspaper ad shows boys double seat briefs that were available in assorted colors back in 1987. Normally $2.49 each, that would make them roughly $7.50 for a normal 3 pack or $17.43 for a week supply. Seems expensive for 1987, good thing the were on sale for only $1.49 pair.
Tiger Underwear today has the largest selection of boys double seat briefs in the world! Click here to check out Tiger Underwear inventory of both white and color boys double seat briefs.
]]>Before cable and their 24 hour news channels, we used to come home from work and read the newspaper. Spread within the news articles, ads would appear such as the one shown. Listed above is a Carter Underwear ad for back to school at your local Meyer Brothers store. Next to the ad is an actual package for sale on Ebay currently. Thanks Brad to bringing this to my attention!
]]>You can occasionally find vintage double-back briefs on ebay. Here is an example of an 1970's newspaper add for GRANTS. Apparently that week they offered their own department store brand of men's double-back briefs, a 3 pack for only $2.17. Today the cost of this never before opened package is considerably more!
]]>In the 1960's, long before video games, boys played outside. It didn't matter the activity and it didn't even have to be organized sports, a lot of boys liked to ride their bicycle, play cowboys and indians or even deliver newspapers. Boys spent their free time being active so the clothes they wore had to be strong including briefs with a durable double-back for longer wear. This is what mom's wanted in the 1960s and JC Penneys made some of the best in this era!
]]>Rob Morrow is a critically acclaimed actor, writer, and director with an established career in television spanning over three decades. In 1993, he directed The Silent Alarm, a 1960's suburbia movie short, that tells the story of a young boy who watches a strange man sell his mom an alarm for their home.
In the end, the boy is punished by spanking which shows the child wearing a white double-seat brief before he get the courage to tell his mom the real story of her boyfriend.

Tiger Underwear features men's and boys double-seat briefs that were "Like You Wore Before". Many of our customers were baby-boomers and going to junior high school sometime in the 1970s when department store double-seat briefs was what you wore under your groovy 70's fashions!
This film that was originally shown on PBS television will take you back in time. First broadcast in 1971, The Los Angeles Times wrote: “The finest documentary ever produced on American education. No one should miss it.”
It won the documentary of the year in Excellence in Broadcast Journalism and Edward R. Murrow Award for Distinguished Achievement in Broadcast Association.
One teacher said: “It fully documents in ways I never thought possible, the world of the junior high school student and teacher. It is an amazing document and for the life of me, I can’t figure out how they did it.”
]]>A half a century ago, back to school shopping was similar as it is today. Every teenage boy wanted to have the same fashions he knew his peers were going to wear. That even included the basics like underwear.
In 1969, moms mostly shopped in department stores like Sears, JC Penneys and Wards. 50 years ago, back to school shopping meant purchasing boys double-seat briefs. The quality and comfort beats anything that is offered out there today except for Tiger, "Underwear Like You Wore Before"!
]]>The old debate of boxers versus briefs was going on even back in the 1960's as shown in this catalog picture. In the 1970's, kids wanted to wear briefs and thought of boxers as something their grandpa's would wear. Times have changed as Underwear was not a fashion statement like they are today. The baby boomer generation wanted to wear briefs and the best quality briefs offered a double-seat for twice the wear!
]]>Above is a 50 year old catalog advertisement and a photo of this actual product today. It has been the inspiration of Tiger Underwear to bring back this classic brief that features a thick double panel seat and dashes on the waistband.
]]>Today's special on Ebay! An actual vintage (circa 1960's) 3 Pack of HealthKnit Double Seat Briefs. You can own and wear this style and enjoy the comfort of these full cut briefs for $129.99. If that is too much, you can own from the same seller, one pair of HealthKnit Double Seat Briefs in a size (40-42) for only $99.99.
These astronomical "Buy it Now" and or bids on eBay are not unusual for actual vintage briefs. Double seat briefs are typically 5 to 10 times higher than the same vintage single seat brand. It is not because of greed from the seller, but from the willingness of consumers to pay more when the demand is high and supply is low.
As a consumer in the 1990's, I did everything in my power by contacting JC Penney and other department stores to bring back their original brand of double seat briefs. Looking back, I'm certain I was not the only one given the "Supply and Demand" of this style today.
With every major brand and department store dropping the double-seat option by the early 90's, I made it my mission in life to bring them back. This is A Tiger Underwear Purpose, as the demand is greater than the supply for a quality, full cut double seat briefs.
]]>Sears has been in the news the last few days and its future is in doubt. Time to reflect and remember the Sears catalog. Above is a 1960's photo of a typical Sears department store from that era. Below that is a boys underwear ad featuring Sears Best brief featuring a double-seat.
]]>Some of our customers inform us how much they use to enjoy wearing the old Wards department store style double-seat briefs. In some previous post, customers told how the double-back from Wards felt thicker and made playing little league sports much more comfortable. Shown above is a newspaper ad from the early 1980's that took up nearly the entire page! It seemed boys liked these briefs for the comfort-fit and moms liked the durability of the double-back!
]]>This bike was almost every kids dream back in the 1970's. Today you can find them restored on ebay for about $2,500. Remembering your childhood doesn't have to cost you a fortune. Tiger Underwear offers long wearing, double thickness seat briefs just Like You Wore Before! Tiger Briefs are available in both men's and boys sizes and will only set you back $19.99.
]]>Most brands of men's underwear in the 1960's such as Hanes and BVD all featured a double-seat. Some of these men are the same ones that in fought in World War II or known today as the "Greatest Generation". Department stores were shown to advertise these briefs for boys but they also marketed them to men that expected comfort and quality that only came from a full cut double-seat brief.
]]>Researching department store catalogs from the 1970's gives us a glimpse of the style of men's and boys fashions. The popularity of boys double-back briefs is even shown today on a retro streaming service.
]]>
Shown here is the advertisement for boys underwear in the 1960's. The ad shows the dashes on the waistband as well as noting the "Soft Double-Fabric Back".
]]>
It's hard to find vintage boys department store double-back briefs anywhere online but you can still find them advertised in old catalogs for sale. Here is one from the 1970's that shows dashes on the waistband and a soft double-fabric back for durability and absorbency.
]]>Vintage catalog ad from the 1970s featuring a male model wearing all white briefs that sports a dash waistband. A box to the left showing the brief features a double-back which was common in both men and boys briefs in that time period.
]]>Up until August 1989, this ad was probably helping moms take notice that these particular boys briefs were not double-seat. Apparently even as the 1980's were about to give way to a new decade, single or double-back briefs were two options that were still available and hence spelling it out cleared up any confusion regarding the product.
]]>Over the years, we have collected catalogs and newspapers featuring men's and boys briefs. Some of the oldest ads date back to the mid 1950's. To our surprise, a well known national brand and even a major department store in 1957 offered double back briefs for both boys and men. The double fabric panel seat were described in a variety of ways, such as "Double-Back", "Double-Seat" with even one store coining the phrase as "Action Back". Adjectives emphasizing it as extra "Thick", "Comfy", "Absorbent" and "Long Wearing" were furthered used to help enhanced this feature.
Today, Tiger is the only USA underwear company that has been offering this American classic in a variety of fabrics, colors and prints. Ten years in the making, Tiger makes the underwear "Like You Wore Before".
]]>These quality briefs have not been available in department store since the 1980's as shown in this color paper ad. Fortunately Tiger Underwear has brought back an almost exact replica of this double seat brief as shown above for boys.
Note: the selection of men's are going quick, get yours before they are no longer available!
